Visit Scicli and discover the locations of Commissioner Montalbano.
A pearl of Ibla Baroque, nestling between Ragusa and Modica. Along the streets of the old town of Scicli there are beautiful golden stone churches and sumptuous palaces one after another. Through scenic sash windows, you can see the sea in the distance, and the light stone creates fascinating tricks of light with the sun. Scicli is also home to some of the most important museums in the Ibla area and the locations of Commissioner Montalbano. Then, dotted along the coast you’ll find beaches and coves, breath-taking cliffs, and ancient seaside villages, such as Donnalucata, Sampieri and Cava d’Aliga.
Here are the must-see attractions:
Don’t miss
Church of San Bartolomeo
It is one of the most important monuments in Scicli. Inserted in a natural setting of rare beauty, it has been called “a pearl inside the valves of a shell”. The statues and sculptures that embellish it make it a real marvel of Sicilian Baroque.
Palazzo Beneventano
It is the most famous noble building in Scicli. In 2002 it was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The characteristic grotesque masks, the moors heads, and the coats of arms that decorate it, make it unique.
Convento della Croce
One of the most striking places in the city. At the top of one of the Scicli hills stands this Convent. It is one of the oldest buildings in Scicli, which also survived the earthquake of 1693.
The Park of Chiafura
A district of troglodytic caves already inhabited in the Neolithic era and until the 1950s. In this rocky site you can identify the residential area of old Scicli.
Church of San Giovanni
A gem of Sicilian Baroque, it will take your breath away, with its rich decorations on the facade and its splendid frescoes. If you feel like you’ve seen it before, it’s no surprise: it appears in many scenes from Commissioner Montalbano.
